You searched for your business, saw competitors in the map results and could not find your listing where it used to be. That is worth investigating, but one search is not a diagnosis. Google local results change with search location, query and competition. Start by separating a missing or restricted profile from a change in its ranking.
1. Check whether the profile is visible and eligible
Sign in to the Google account that manages your Business Profile. Search for the business by its exact name, then check Maps. Look for verification requests, a suspension or disabled status, a closure label, and incorrect public business details. A profile problem requires a different fix from ordinary ranking movement. Google explains how to find your business on Google and appeal an eligible suspended profile.
If the profile is suspended, follow Google's official process rather than creating a replacement listing for the same business. If it is verified and visible by name but not showing for a service search, continue below.
2. Reproduce the problem without mistaking location for a penalty
Record the exact search phrase, date, device and location. Compare the same service search in several relevant neighborhoods. For example, a Winter Park business might appear differently for a search conducted in Winter Park than one conducted across Orlando. A single screenshot cannot establish a citywide ranking loss.
Google says its main local factors are relevance, distance and prominence. Distance cannot be overcome simply by adding more cities to the service-area field. Read Google's local ranking guidance before purchasing a tool or changing your location settings.
3. Review recent profile edits, but do not assume they caused the drop
Make a short change log: primary and secondary categories, website URL, phone number, hours, address or map pin, business name and service areas. Compare current details with what the business actually offers. Correct factual errors individually; do not repeatedly change categories or stuff location keywords into the business name in hopes of a quick recovery.
For a contractor operating from home, address visibility and service areas should follow Google's business representation guidelines. Our Orlando contractor Business Profile guide covers the setup in more detail.
4. Check actual customer interactions alongside rankings
Open your profile's Performance view and compare an appropriate period with the previous one. Look at available views, calls, website clicks, direction requests and searches. Then check website inquiries separately. A map-rank screenshot is not a lead report: searches and customer actions can move differently.
Google documents these metrics in its Business Profile performance guide. Some metrics are unavailable for some businesses; search-term data can also be delayed. Note those limitations instead of treating missing figures as zero.
5. If Google reviews disappeared, troubleshoot that separately
A missing review does not prove that the profile was penalized or that a specific map ranking changed. Google says reviews can be delayed, filtered or removed for policy violations, and that some legitimate reviews may be removed by mistake. Its missing and delayed reviews help page explains the common situations. If you believe a legitimate review was removed in error, follow Google's support route and provide evidence where available.
Never pay for reviews, screen out unhappy customers, or promise that a removed review can be restored. Genuine feedback and clear responses help prospective customers assess your work even when rankings fluctuate.
6. Compare the business, not just the map positions
Check whether nearby competitors offer a more specific service match, have clearer public information, or have earned substantial new recognition. These are useful observations, not proof of an algorithmic cause. Google's precise ranking weights are not public. Keep photos, services, reviews, and your website accurate because they help customers decide whether to contact you.
- Save your baseline queries and locations so you can compare like with like.
- Fix real business-information errors, not every ranking wobble.
- Watch calls, website clicks and actual inquiries, not only map-grid positions.
- Do not buy reviews, links or promises of a guaranteed three-pack position.
What if nothing obvious changed?
Keep the evidence and recheck comparable searches rather than rebuilding the profile overnight. If the listing is restricted, use Google's official resolution process. If the listing is healthy but qualified inquiries are declining, review your service pages, contact options and local-search visibility as one connected system.
For Central Florida businesses, we can help review the evidence and prioritize changes through Google Business Profile management or an Orlando SEO audit. We do not promise a position or a recovery deadline.
